CHARLIES SPORTS NEWS FOR NFL

AUGUST 2009

Bengals Signs Their First Round Pick In NFL Draft
Offensive tackle Andre Smith signed a contract Sunday with the Cincinnati Bengals, ending an impasse that dragged on a month into the preseason.

The Bengals originally planned to have Smith start at right tackle, but he has missed all three preseason games. He was in Cincinnati and agreed to the deal shortly before the start of a late afternoon practice. "He has a lot of work to do, but he knows the challenge ahead of him to make an impact on our team as soon as possible," coach Marvin Lewis said in a statement released as practice began. Smith, the sixth overall pick, was the highest unsigned NFL pick with one week left in the preseason. The Bengals had insisted on paying him less than a player taken later in the draft, Oakland's Darrius Heyward-Bey, leading to the impasse.
NFL'S texans Make Trade
The Houston Texans have traded defensive tackle Travis Johnson to the San Diego Chargers.

Terms of the deal were not immediately available and it won't be complete until Johnson passes a physical. Johnson was a first-round pick in 2005, but never lived up to expectations. His career has been marked by numerous injuries and inconsistent play. He returned to practice last week for the first time this season after undergoing sports hernia surgery just before the start of camp. Johnson started 14 games last season and 13 in 2007.
Steelers Starting Right guard To Miss Entire NFL Season
Pittsburgh Steelers right guard Darnell Stapleton has been placed on the injured reserve list with a knee injury and will miss the season.

Stapleton injured his left knee during the first week of training camp and had arthroscopic surgery to remove loose cartilage. An undrafted player who started in the Super Bowl, he was expected to be ready by the start of the season
Veteran NFL Player Sustains Neck Injury
Baltimore Ravens cornerback Samari Rolle will spend at least the opening six weeks of the season on

the physically unable to perform list with a neck injury that could end his career. The 33-year-old Rolle missed six games in 2008 because of the injury. He underwent surgery last year and intends to have another operation. "Samari is going to have some more work done on the neck, try to shore it up in there," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Monday. "He was really excited about it. I think he was feeling it was going to go the other way. ... It's good news."
