CHARLIES SPORTS COLLEGE FOOTBALL SPORTS NEWS - JUNE 2009

South Carolina College Football Player Suspended
It had been a quiet offseason for Steve Spurrier and South Carolina - until this past weekend, when some of the same off-the-field troubles the Gamecocks have dealt with in past years sprang up again.

On Monday, Spurrier suspended starting defensive end Clifton Geathers following his Sunday morning arrest by Columbia police for fighting outside a nightclub. Geathers was charged with public drunkeness, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, police spokesman Brick Lewis said.
Former NCAA College Footall Player Concicted Of Murder
Former Nebraska running back Thunder Collins was convicted Monday of first-degree murder and other charges stemming from a September 2008 shooting in Omaha that left one man dead and another seriously wounded.

The Douglas County jury also found the former Cornhuskers player guilty of attempted second-degree murder and two weapons counts. He faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison for the first-degree murder conviction. As Collins left the courtroom, he yelled at the jury of six men and six women, "Are you happy? Are you happy? You know I didn't kill anyone.
Penn State College Football Quarterback Ready To Lead Team

Daryll Clark walks with a little swagger in his step, his voice cool and confident.

He's not worried about who left, he's excited about who's stepping in. Penn State's top three receivers are gone, as are its top three offensive linemen. Clark's backup at quarterback? A hotly recruited true freshman. Yet Clark assures the No. 9 Nittany Lions' potent offense isn't going to change. "We haven't tuned down anything in the playbook," said the charismatic signal-caller. "It all comes down to the confidence
Tulane College Football Players Back After Flu Like Symptoms
More than two dozen Tulane football players are back at practice after coming down with mild flu-like symptoms last week.

School spokesman Roger Dunaway said Monday that the 27 players were cleared by a team physician to return to action. The infected players were instructed to remain in their dorm rooms or apartments late last week and were treated there. While the symptoms were mild, it was feared that two players might have the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu.
