Memphis NCAA Mens College Basketball Basketball Recruit Elects to go Pro In China
The latest high school basketball product to head overseas to continue his career will, indeed, be following a different path: Latavious Williams is headed to China.
A 6-8 forward from Christian Life Center in Humble, Tex., Williams released the news to Rivals.com early Tuesday that he would not be following through on plans to enroll at Memphis and instead would be seeking a pro contract in a Chinese professional league.
"It was a difficult decision," Williams said in a press release to Rivals. "But after consulting with a number of people, and taking my family situation into consideration, playing overseas is the best move for me.
Washington To Face Georgetown In Mens College Basketball For First Time Ever
The defending Pacific-10 Conference regular-season champion Washington Huskies will be playing Georgetown this winter for the first time.
Organizers for the Wooden Classic announced Wednesday that the Huskies and Hoyas of the Big East will meet Dec. 12 in Anaheim, Calif. It is part of the annual doubleheader honoring legendary former UCLA coach John Wooden.
Washington coach Lorenzo Romar says his Huskies consider any game associated with Wooden to be special, and "to be able to compete against a program with such a rich tradition as Georgetown makes this year's experience even more complete.
NCAA Mens College Basketball Coach To Join Other Major Sports To Try Too Block Betting
The four major pro sports leagues and the NCAA sued Delaware Friday, seeking to block the state from implementing sports betting.
Delaware's sports betting plan "would irreparably harm professional and amateur sports by fostering suspicion and skepticism that individual plays and final scores of games may have been influenced by factors other than honest athletic competition," the leagues and NCAA said in a lawsuit filed in federal court in Delaware.
Congress banned sports betting in 1992 while grandfathering four states — Delaware, Nevada, Montana and Oregon — that had already offered it. But the lawsuit argues that Delaware's plan to allow single-game betting would violate the legislation because Delaware has never offered single-game betting before.
WCC Mens College Basketball conference Tournament To Stay In Las Vegas
The West Coast Conference tournament is staying in Vegas.
The WCC and the Orleans Arena signed a three-year contract extension to keep the men's and women's conference basketball tournaments in Las Vegas through 2012. It's a significant step for a mid-major league looking to make more of an impact nationally, considering the top conferences play their tournaments at neutral sites.
"My philosophy is if you can support a neutral-site model, it's the best model," WCC commissioner Jamie Zaninovich said Wednesday in a phone interview from Las Vegas following a formal announcement of the deal.
"We have found we have the right fan base, the right arena and the right destination. The three things we look at are financial success, student-athlete and fan experience and exposure. If you can accomplish those three things on a neutral site, you have to do it if you want to be a major player in college basketball."
