Major League Baseball Pitcher throws 1 Hitter Against Seattle
His team may be in last place, but that hasn't stopped Kansas City ace Zack Greinke from building his case as the best pitcher in the American League.
Greinke pitched a one-hitter Sunday, allowing only a second-inning single by Kenji Johjima as the Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 3-0.
Greinke (13-8) retired the final 22 batters after Johjima's two-out, soft single to center field.
The right-hander leads the majors with three shutouts and six complete games, and his 2.32 ERA is best in the AL, all substantial arguments for the Cy Young Award.
Giants Tie Rockies for MLB National League Wild Card
In a matter of five days, the Colorado Rockies' playoff push took a big hit.
Edgar Renteria hit a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning and the San Francsico Giants pulled even with Colorado in the NL wild-card race with a 9-5 victory on Sunday and a three-game sweep.
The Rockies entered the series two games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West and are now six back in the division. They lost their season-high fifth straight - all this after rallying each time to take three of four from the Giants last week at Coors Field.
MLB Team Recalls Pitcher
The Detroit Tigers plan to recall right-hander Jeremy Bonderman from an injury rehab assignment Tuesday, the same day they promote five other players from Triple-A Toledo.
Bonderman missed half of last season after undergoing surgery to correct a blood clot in his right shoulder and lasted just four innings of his only start this summer, a June loss at the Chicago White Sox. He was 0-3 with a 5.79 ERA in 13 relief appearances in Toledo.
MLB Teams Can't Make Harden Deal
The Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins were unable to pull off a trade-deadline deal involving Rich Harden, the Chicago Tribune reports.
The Twins claimed Harden on waivers last Thursday, but the Cubs didn't want to let Harden go for nothing. So he will take the mound against Houston tonight.
Chicago will have exclusive negotiating rights with Harden for 15 days after the end of the World Series, at which time the pitcher becomes a free agent. Cubs officials have said they want to bring Harden back, and he has expressed a desire to stay in Chicago. However, Harden's injury history makes it unlikely the team will offer him a multi-year deal.
