Major League Baseball Pitcher out For Season

Former MLB Owner Dies at 93

One of the owners of the Cincinnati Reds from their Big Red Machine days has died.

William J. Williams Sr. died Sunday night at age 93. He was part of a small group that bought the team in 1966 and celebrated back-to-back World Series championships in 1975-76. His family sold controlling interest in team in 1985. In 2006, sons W. Joseph Williams Jr. and Thomas L. Williams were part of a group that bought controlling interest in the Reds, along with Bob Castellini.

Former MLB Slugger Signs Minor League Contract

The Colorado Rockies have signed former AL MVP Jason Giambi to a minor league contract.

The 38-year-old Giambi will report to Triple-A Colorado Springs, hoping for a September call-up to help the Rockies with their pennant push. Colorado went into Monday with a three-game lead in the NL wild-card race. Giambi was cut by Oakland earlier this month after hitting .193 with 11 home runs and 40 RBIs. He had been on the disabled list because of a strained right quadriceps before the A's released him, cutting short the struggling slugger's return to his first major league club

MLB Right Fielder Sidelined Wtih Sore Thumb

Right fielder Jeff Francoeur was out of the starting lineup Monday against Philadelphia because of a sore left thumb, leaving the depleted Mets without their most productive hitter of late.

Acquired last month in a trade with Atlanta, Francoeur was injured Sunday while making a diving catch. X-rays were negative, but his thumb swelled up afterward and he went to the hospital Monday for an MRI.
