CHARLIES SPORTS MLB SPORTS NEWS - AUGUST 2009

Major League Baseball Team Activates Sheffield
Gary Sheffield was activated from the disabled list Sunday, giving the injury-riddled New York Mets another healthy option in the outfield.

The Mets also announced their starting pitcher for Monday night's series finale against Arizona. Right-hander Nelson Figueroa will be called up from Triple-A Buffalo to face Diamondbacks ace Dan Haren. The 35-year-old Figueroa, who made one start for New York earlier this season, was 7-5 at Buffalo with a 2.25 ERA, second-best in the International League. He grew up rooting for the Mets in Brooklyn.
MLB'S Dogers Lose Pitcher
Chad Billingsley was dominant on the mound but overmatched in the dugout.

Billingsley pitched five scoreless innings, Matt Kemp homered and matched a career high with five RBIs and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 9-1 on Sunday night. Kemp had three hits, including a three-run homer in the fifth and a two-run single in the eighth as the Dodgers outhit the Braves 19-5. Billingsley (11-6) left with a cramp in his right hamstring. He said he wanted to stay in the game and even put on his batting helmet to hit in the sixth, but manager Joe Torre had other ideas.
MLB Pitcher Brandon Webb To Have surgery
Arizona Diamondbacks righthander Brandon Webb will undergo shoulder surgery on Monday, the club said.

The surgery will take place in Arlington, Texas, and be performed by Keith Meister, team physician for the Texas Rangers. "We support his decision to have surgery," Diamondbacks general manager Josh Byrnes said in a statement Sunday night. "Obviously, we exhausted every other course of treatment."
Marlins Hit Two Homers In Bottom Of 9th In MLB Sunday
Cody Ross had shaving cream caked on his collar, while Dan Uggla had the stuff dripping from his neck and earlobes.

Back-to-back solo homers in the ninth inning to win a game - on consecutive pitches, no less - left the Florida Marlins in a delirious mood. Two outs from defeat, Uggla and Ross turned the Marlins' fortunes around with two mighty swings. Uggla tied it with his 19th homer, Ross followed with his second of the day and 17th of the year, and Florida beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 on Sunday to move within five games of Philadelphia for the NL East lead.
